Parental involvement fosters positive attitudes toward school, improves homework habits, reduces absenteeism, reduces student's risk of dropping out of school, and enhances academic achievement. With student-to-counselor ratios of more than 1000:1 in many California schools, children in underserved communities are far less likely to receive the advice and counsel necessary for them to pursue their dreams. It is essential for parents, caregivers and families to have a more active role in preparing our youth for the future!
EDUCATE L.A. empowers families to more proactively support their children's educational progression and college/career preparation through technology and community events. Developed in 1998, the programs' primary objective is to efficiently disseminate essential information, and provide families with resources for educational programs and services. We measure the effectiveness of our program through surveys, focus groups and hands on learning workshops. Our mission is to develop effective and replicable programs, designed to empower parents who can then serve as community resources for families in their schools, churches or organizations.
EDUCATE L.A. has been recognized as a caring community leader and has received support from corporate and foundation sponsors to include Wells Fargo Bank, AT&T Broadband, IBM, Washington Mutual Bank, the California Consumer Protection Foundation, Verizon, U.S. Bank and others. We've earned endorsement of many respected community leaders and organizations to include Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas (CA-26), AVID Los Angeles County, the California Science Center School, several California State University campuses, GEAR Up Inland Empire, and the Tomas Rivera Policy Institute's "Kids to College" program.
Our current programs include the Gateway to Academic Achievement, the California Education Funders Forums, the Knowledge Symposium and the Charitable Giving Awards. Please read on for more information.
The Gateway to Academic Achievement®
The Gateway to Academic Achievement program consists of two integral parts - the Gateway CD and the Gateway Portfolio, both designed to provide essential resources while encouraging parent/family involvement in education.
The Gateway CD is an interactive and engaging software program designed for students, parents and educators that helps bridge the widening "digital divide" by providing essential resources in a user-friendly format. Featuring hundreds of pertinent and informative web links, the Gateway makes finding homework help or college preparation websites a breeze. The extensive college preparation area provides links to college search engines, on-line admissions, catalogs from over 25,000 colleges, and detailed information on scholarships and applying for state and federal assistance. There are links to sites that explain the college application process, from what high school classes to take and when, to how to choose your college.
The Gateway Portfolio compiles the most effective research and resources available from leading educational organizations to provide families with the most current information for preparing children for the 6th through12th grade experience. A full explanation of the A-G requirements, the California High School Exit Exam, the SAT & ACT tests, the benefits of AP courses and how to enroll, the No Child Left Behind Act and how it affects your family, and so much more.
Give your children every opportunity to fulfill their dreams!

The California Education Funders Forums provide non-profit directors, school administrators, teachers and others with detailed information on the grant application process - directly from the corporations and foundations that fund proposals.
The following corporations and foundations served as panelists for previous Funders Forums: The Bannerman Foundation, Boeing, Boeing's Employee Community Fund, BP "A+ for Energy", the CA Community Foundation, the CA Public Utilities Commission, the Carol and James Collins Foundation, Chevron, Community Partners, the Dwight Stuart Youth Foundation, Edison International, the Entertainment Industry Foundation, Hilton Hotels, IBM, the LA Times Family Fund, Los Angeles Social Venture Partners, the Mattel Foundation, the Nissan Foundation, the Riordan Foundation, SBC, Sempra Energy, the S. Mark Taper Foundation, the Staples Center Foundation, State Farm Insurance, Toyota, Union Bank, the Ventura County Community Foundation, Verizon, Washington Mutual Bank and Wells Fargo Bank.
The Knowledge Symposium™
In developing the Symposium, most of the families surveyed indicated that the primary reason that they are not actively involved with their children's day-to-day academics, is because they feel uninformed and unprepared. Many indicated a great interest in becoming more active, but expressed a feeling of “not knowing where to start” their research.
The mission of the Knowledge Symposium is to empower families throughout Los Angeles County to become more actively involved with their children’s educational progression, by providing a centralized forum for researching a wide variety of education related programs, products and services.
The Charitable Giving Awards™
The 2007 Charitable Giving Awards honored 5 corporations and foundations that fund education and youth empowerment related programs. The Giving Awards were developed to thank those who have participated in our Education Funders Forums, have sponsored donations of our software and/or are providing much needed funding for education, youth and their families.
This year's honored funders included Jonathan Weedman of Wells Fargo, Cassandra Malry of CA Community Protection Foundation, Mike Murray of Verizon, Samona Caldwell of State Farm and Ray Reisler of the S. Mark Taper Foundation. We also honored Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas and Florence Green of the CA Association of Nonprofits for the leadership in supporting the efforts of nonprofits throughout Los Angeles County. Plans are underway for Charitable Giving Awards 2008 - Stay Tuned!
